Cover-up at RIJC's H1N1 Cluster

Reposted from Facebook - Thanks Victor!

To qoute what is reported on the website:

"SINGAPORE: All 500-odd students and 20 teachers at Raffles Institution Boarding School are on Leave of Absence.

This is because a majority of the boarders are foreigners who have been to H1N1-affected countries during the recent school holidays.

Raffles Institution Boarding School has two H1N1 cases, who did not enter the school premises.

They showed symptoms upon arrival in Singapore.

The entire RI campus, with a student population of 4,500, is now segregated into three sections - Junior College, Secondary and Boarding School.

RI said tests and classes were carried out in these segregated groups on Monday to minimise interaction.

All students were also asked to leave immediately after school ended.

Junior college students who are boarders on Leave Of Absence sat for their Common Tests at the boarding school.

RI said it is doing everything it can to ensure the well-being of students by maintaining social distancing and grouping wherever possible. "

Tomorrow is common test (mathematics) so I shall not spend a long time on this post.

But the true situation now is that there are already six confirmed cases of H1N1 in RIB, of which only one has travelled to affect country-Canada.(the rest have been affected by him) Bayley block has been completely quarantined(no movement into or out of the block and a few others from the other blocks have been quarantined inside separate rooms.
The other "normal" boarders are required to stay inside the boarding complex at all times and take their common test in the dining hall-a decision that caused much anger and frustration among the borders.

The "every possible measure that was taken to ensure the safety of the students" as claimed by the administration include locking of study room and games room "so as to minimise possibilities of mass assembly" (is exam mass assembly?well, boarding minister said that "some things are unavoidable") and restricting movement of borders to within the boarding complex. (I wonder whether they care about internal spreading of the disease.Maybe local students' lives do value more than ours?well,I admit that it is understandable that the administration prioritise safety of local students, it is still disappointing for most of us.

People always accuse of the Chinese government of covering up accurate information and lack of actions to fight against certain problems but shall I question the rationale of the Singapore government to practice media censorship in this case?

In the past, cases of mass food poisoning and mass dengue fever in RIB were also "decorated" in the news or simply totally ignored.I wonder whether it is the problem of RIB administration or something else.

Regardless of the reason, we, as scholars, have no choice but to accept whatever "they" have arranged for us "for our best interest", as they claim.Sadly, we are trapped by the Singapore way of pragmatism. There is a Chinese saying, “人在屋檐下,不得不低头。”

没有什么道德评价,仅仅是事实。希望身边的同学不要太情绪化,理性的看待问题。毕竟要先静下心考试,考完之后再见机行事吧。
